Tesla MOT and servicing

Published by the Serviced247 editorial teamLast reviewed 24 October 2026Reviewed when manufacturer guidance changes

A Tesla needs an MOT like any other car in Great Britain, but it does not need the annual service that usually gets booked alongside one. That combination confuses a lot of new owners.

The MOT rules for a Tesla

  • First MOT three years after first registration, then every 12 months
  • Carried out by any DVSA-authorised MOT test station
  • The exhaust emissions section does not apply
  • Brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, visibility, structure and electrical items are all tested as normal

There is no service to book alongside it

With a petrol or diesel car, booking the MOT and the annual service together is the standard money-saver. With a Tesla there is no annual service, so the useful equivalent is to have the MOT done and separately keep on top of the published maintenance items - cabin filter, brake fluid check, caliper service and tyres.

Where to have it tested

Any DVSA-authorised test station can test a Tesla, and MOT test standards do not vary between stations. If the car needs work to pass, check the garage is equipped for the vehicle's weight and braking system before agreeing to it.

Serviced247 lists DVSA-authorised MOT stations from published DVSA data. We do not verify EV or Tesla capability beyond MOT authorisation.
