Methodology

Everything factual on this site is traceable to a published source. This page explains exactly how we get from the DVSA's raw register to the pages you see.

1. Source data

We use the DVSA's active MOT stations publication. It lists sites currently authorised to carry out MOT tests in England, Scotland and Wales. MOT testing in Northern Ireland is carried out by the DVA at government test centres and is a separate system - those centres are not covered by this dataset and are not listed here.

The release we currently hold was published on 26 February 2026. GOV.UK says this list is updated around every 3 months, so stations may have opened or closed since the release date. Always call a station before travelling.

2. Processing

  • Whitespace, casing and punctuation in names and addresses are normalised.
  • Exact duplicate site records are removed; the site number is the unique key.
  • Postcodes are split into area (e.g. LS) and district (e.g. LS1) to build postcode pages.
  • Towns and regions are derived from the address and postcode fields.
  • Tested vehicle classes (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7) are taken directly from the register and never inferred.

3. Which pages we publish

We deliberately do not publish a page for every possible place-and-keyword combination. A location page is only indexed when it has enough stations to be genuinely useful - currently at least three for a town and at least one for a postcode area. Smaller places remain browsable but are marked noindex and kept out of our sitemap, and their stations are listed on the parent postcode area or region page instead. Service, mobile-mechanic and manufacturer pages for a specific location are only published where we hold verified provider capability for that work - today we do not, so those combinations are not published at all.

4. What the data does not tell us

  • Whether a site also offers servicing, repairs, tyres or diagnostics.
  • Opening hours, prices, availability or booking methods.
  • Quality, pass rates, ratings or customer experience.

We do not guess at any of these. Where a garage claims and verifies its listing, added details are labelled as garage-supplied with the date they were verified.

5. Prices

Any price on this site is an indicative range for Great Britain covering a type of work, not a quote and not a specific garage's price. The MOT test has a statutory maximum fee set by the DVSA; garages may charge less.
