How much does it cost to service an electric car?

Published by the Serviced247 editorial teamLast reviewed 24 October 2026

EV servicing is generally cheaper than petrol or diesel servicing because the expensive consumables are gone. The saving is real but smaller than often claimed, because tyres, brakes and the items that remain are not free - and on heavier cars they cost more.

What drives the cost

  • Which items are actually due - many EV services are a short checklist plus a cabin filter
  • Tyres - the largest recurring cost for most EV owners; EV-rated tyres cost more and wear faster
  • Brakes - used less, but corrosion from light use still means pads, discs and caliper servicing
  • Coolant and brake fluid on their own time-based intervals
  • Labour rate, and whether the garage holds high-voltage qualifications
  • Diagnostic and software work, which may need manufacturer-level access

Price ranges on this page are Serviced247 editorial estimates of typical UK independent-garage pricing. They are not quotes, no garage is bound by them, and they vary by vehicle, parts and location. See our methodology for how we produce them.

How it compares with petrol and diesel

Compare over several years rather than a single visit. An EV avoids oil, filters, spark plugs, exhausts and cambelts, and brake wear is lower - but tyre spend is usually higher and any high-voltage diagnostic work carries a premium labour rate.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What exactly is on your EV service checklist for my model?
  • What EV or high-voltage qualifications do the technicians hold?
  • Is any high-voltage work done in-house or subcontracted?
  • Will the service be recorded in the digital service record?
  • What is included in the quoted price, and what is charged separately?

How we handle price information

Serviced247 does not hold garage price lists, manufacturer pricing or service-plan data. Anything we publish about cost is an editorial explanation of the factors involved, not a quote.
