Volkswagen servicing

Volkswagen, like Audi, runs either a fixed (time and distance) or a flexible (longlife) service regime, with an oil change service and a broader inspection service on top.

DSG gearbox oil is a separate scheduled job on many models, and it is one of the most commonly missed items when owners compare service quotes.

Volkswagen service types

  • Oil change service - engine oil and filter plus checks; the more frequent of the two.
  • Inspection service - a broader service adding filters and a longer inspection list.
  • Fixed regime - shorter, predictable intervals for short-journey and lower-mileage use.
  • Flexible / longlife regime - longer intervals for higher-mileage long-run use, requiring longlife-specification oil.

Independent specialist or franchised dealer?

Both are legitimate options once the car is outside its warranty period, and many owners move to an independent specialist as the car ages. An independent that specialises in the marque will normally have the diagnostic software, the service literature and the model-specific experience that a general garage may not.

If your car is still under a manufacturer warranty or on a service plan, check the terms of that agreement before booking anywhere: the requirements around schedules, parts and record-keeping are set by the agreement, not by us.

  • Ask which diagnostic equipment and software the garage uses for the marque
  • Ask whether the service will be recorded in the service book or a digital service record, and what evidence you will receive
  • Ask what parts and oil specification are used, and whether they meet the manufacturer specification
  • Keep every invoice - documented history matters at resale

Serviced247 does not hold verified records of which garages specialise in Volkswagen or carry out DSG servicing. Confirm directly with the garage.

Common Volkswagen models owners ask about

Service requirements differ by engine and model year rather than by badge alone. The models below are the ones UK owners most often search about; the schedule for your specific car is the one in its handbook or service indicator.

  • Polo
  • Golf - including GTI and R variants with different parts costs
  • T-Roc, Tiguan and Touareg
  • Passat and Arteon
  • Transporter and Caddy (commercial schedules differ)
  • ID. models - EV schedules with high-voltage checks

Before you book

  • Confirm which service type is actually due - not just the tier a garage offers
  • Get the quote itemised, including oil specification and parts
  • Agree an authorisation limit for any extra work
  • Check the MOT due date and consider combining the two visits
