BMW servicing

BMW uses condition-based servicing: sensors and algorithms monitor oil condition, mileage, time and usage, and the car tells you which service items are due rather than following a fixed annual pattern.

That means the useful question is not "is it time for a full service?" but "what does the car say is due?" - and then whether the garage you use can read and reset those service records properly.

BMW service types

  • Oil service - engine oil and oil filter, plus a check over. The most frequent item on the schedule.
  • Inspection service (often shown as Inspection 1 and Inspection 2) - a broader service adding filters and a longer inspection list; Inspection 2 is the more comprehensive of the two.
  • Individual CBS items - brake fluid, brake pads and discs, spark plugs, vehicle check and, where applicable, emissions test, each with their own due date or mileage.

The exact content of each service varies by engine, model and year. Your car's service menu and handbook are the authority.

Independent specialist or franchised dealer?

Both are legitimate options once the car is outside its warranty period, and many owners move to an independent specialist as the car ages. An independent that specialises in the marque will normally have the diagnostic software, the service literature and the model-specific experience that a general garage may not.

If your car is still under a manufacturer warranty or on a service plan, check the terms of that agreement before booking anywhere: the requirements around schedules, parts and record-keeping are set by the agreement, not by us.

  • Ask which diagnostic equipment and software the garage uses for the marque
  • Ask whether the service will be recorded in the service book or a digital service record, and what evidence you will receive
  • Ask what parts and oil specification are used, and whether they meet the manufacturer specification
  • Keep every invoice - documented history matters at resale

Serviced247 does not hold verified records of which garages specialise in BMW or hold BMW diagnostic equipment. Confirm directly with the garage before booking.

Common BMW models owners ask about

Service requirements differ by engine and model year rather than by badge alone. The models below are the ones UK owners most often search about; the schedule for your specific car is the one in its handbook or service indicator.

  • 1 Series and 2 Series - the highest-volume UK models; petrol and diesel schedules differ
  • 3 Series and 4 Series
  • 5 Series
  • X1, X3 and X5
  • Plug-in hybrid and i models - different schedules again, with high-voltage checks

Before you book

  • Confirm which service type is actually due - not just the tier a garage offers
  • Get the quote itemised, including oil specification and parts
  • Agree an authorisation limit for any extra work
  • Check the MOT due date and consider combining the two visits
